Founded by Filipino-Australian community leader, empowerment advocate, and Master Hypnotherapist Lee Plowman, Miss Multicultural Australia™ was created from a simple but powerful observation:

When women migrate to a new country, they often leave behind more than family, friends, and familiarity. Many experience a loss of identity, confidence, visibility, connection, and certainty about who they are becoming. While they bring with them rich cultural heritage, life experiences, talents, and dreams, the process of adapting to a new environment can leave them feeling disconnected from themselves and uncertain about their future.

After migrating from the Philippines to Australia, Lee experienced firsthand the challenges of rebuilding identity, confidence, opportunities, networks, and belonging in a new country. Through years of advocacy, community leadership, and involvement in multicultural initiatives, including the Australian Red Cross Connected Women program, she met women from diverse cultural backgrounds who shared similar experiences. Behind every culture was a story. Behind every story was a woman with untapped potential. And behind that potential was a need for a structured pathway that could help women grow, lead, belong, and thrive. That insight became the foundation of Miss Multicultural Australia™.

Originally conceived in 2020, the movement underwent years of development, refinement, consultation, and practical implementation before its official launch in 2025 through Miss Multicultural NT™, the founding state program of the national brand. Miss Multicultural Australia™ was never designed to be simply another pageant. It was intentionally created as an empowerment movement. A leadership pathway. A confidence pathway. A cultural pathway. A pathway that helps women reconnect with who they are while providing clarity, structure, and direction for who they are becoming.

At the heart of the movement is the proprietary C.R.O.W.N. Method™ — a structured empowerment framework developed by Lee Plowman to guide women through a journey of self-awareness, confidence-building, leadership development, personal growth, cultural pride, community contribution, and purposeful action. Every workshop, training session, presentation, community activity. Every challenge. Every event. Every opportunity within the movement is intentionally curated to create impact from the inside out.

Because the philosophy is simple: Focus on the Woman Within. Shine Beyond. Miss Multicultural Australia™ believes that when women develop inner strength, they become more aware of their choices. When they become more aware of their choices, they become stronger leaders. When they become stronger leaders, they positively influence their families, workplaces, businesses, and communities. When communities are strengthened, society benefits. This is why the movement is not centered on crowns, titles, or appearances. It is centered on transformation. It is centered on identity. It is centered on leadership. It is centered on creating women who understand their value and use their voice to create positive impact in the world around them.

The first Miss Multicultural NT 2025 titleholder, Sarah Madinah, an Indonesian-Australian woman, represents the beginning of this vision in action. Her crowning marked more than a personal achievement. It marked the beginning of a movement dedicated to empowering women from all cultural backgrounds to embrace their identity, strengthen their confidence, develop leadership skills, and become active contributors within their communities.

Since its official launch in 2025, participants have engaged in empowerment training, confidence-building activities, leadership development experiences, public speaking opportunities, cultural representation, community engagement initiatives, and personal growth workshops designed to strengthen both the individual and the community.

Now entering its second year, Miss Multicultural NT™ continues to grow with an increasing number of women participating in the program and embracing the movement’s vision. The response has been overwhelmingly positive.

As awareness continues to grow, the organisation has begun receiving enquiries and expressions of interest from women, community leaders, and organisations across Australia and internationally. Women from other Australian states have already reached out seeking opportunities to participate and explore how the model can be introduced within their own communities.

Building Social Cohesion Through Pageantry

Miss Multicultural Australia is more than a women's development program. It is a deliberate instrument for social cohesion in a multicultural society. Australia is one of the most culturally diverse nations on earth, yet migrants often report feeling invisible or stereotyped. Pageants, historically, have sometimes reinforced narrow standards of beauty and identity. Lee Plowman is turning that legacy on its head. Her pageant actively encourages women to showcase their cultural heritage through traditional dress, food, music, and storytelling. In doing so, it educates audiences and builds bridges between communities. Community engagement is a core requirement for participants. Each woman undertakes a community service project that addresses a need in her local area. Although Miss Multicultural Australia is still in its early stages, the momentum is building. Lee Plowman plans to expand the pageant to other states and territories, creating a network of regional pageants that feed into a national event. Each regional pageant will be tailored to the specific cultural demographics and community needs of that area. The Northern Territory edition will remain the flagship, drawing on Darwin's unique multicultural character. Lee Plowman's business acumen comes into play here. She describes herself as a coach, businesswoman, investor, and mother. She has built multiple income streams, including her hypnotherapy practice and other services like EmpowerCard that helps strengthen local business and community. The pageant movement is not just for contestants. It is also for community leaders, cultural ambassadors, and changemakers who want to be part of a larger conversation about inclusion and empowerment.

It will open again in the early months of 2027. Eligibility is based not on appearance but on a woman's willingness to grow, serve, and lead. There are no height or weight requirements, age limit for this particular empowerment pageant is 18- 45 years old, and no expectation that participants conform to a single cultural identity. The program is designed for Australian residents who identify with a multicultural background and are committed to personal development and community impact.

Lee Plowman often says that she started the pageant because she wished it had existed when she first arrived in Australia. That personal motivation gives the movement its authenticity. She is not a distant CEO; she is a woman who has walked the same path as many of her participants.
